Cargo near build fails on a simple rs project template

What you need to be done?

Whenever I try to build a simple contract with cargo near build after creating it with cargo near new it fails with:

• Opening repo and determining HEAD and relative path of contract...
• failed

Here is the console command if you ever need to re-run it again:
cargo near build

Error: 
   0: revspec 'HEAD' not found; class=Reference (4); code=NotFound (-3)
