Sometimes when I close the gallery with the Pixel back swipe (left swipe from the right edge) it glitches and scroll the thread down a bit.
It looks like it always scrolls to the next image, so what's probably happening is when I try to close the gallery the app actually changes image to the next one (since I'm swiping form right to left) (it's noticeable if you watch the video frame by frame) and then it's closing the gallery because I used the "back" swipe, and since the gallery changed the image the thread is scrolled to this image, which is down the thread.
On this screenshot you can see how the gallery image is swiped to the next one (when I just wanted to close the gallery) AND the "back" swipe was triggered at the same time (white chevron in the right-middle-ish):
