A warning is needed, that combining different audio interfaces will result in high latency.

Confirmed, but not necessarily a "warning" in terms of a bad thing that happens, but at least a hint.

The experimental "no delay" sync mode works perfectly from my experience with plain ALSA API, but you can easily mess it up using Jack or other APIs.

What was the impulse for filing this issue?

I saw a post on Reddit where a user struggled with it, and refered to this manual example: https://www.reddit.com/r/MIXXX/comments/1hmwvbt/lot_of_latency_when_using_laptop_external_audio/

Ah, it sound like the situation is similar like on Linux. Only some settings work. So we should describe the recommended settings.
Are you able to verify it?
