It'd be great to offer tooltip annotation for balance plots that would show up in common file formats for academic work. Elsewhere, we have a limited SVG implementation; I think we'd also need PDF, or a tooltip-preserving SVG to PDF conversion method, to meet this goal.

Notes: We looked into this a year or two ago and were deterred by the fact that tikzDevice appeared not to work anymore with current versions of R. As of this writing, that's been fixed; tikzDevice is back on CRAN.

Here's a stack overflow discussion demonstrating a latex/tikz solution to producing PDFs with tooltips. Note that the result has the same issue with both tooltips and callouts being displayed that we see with our SVGs currently:
