Answer is till no.

The sensitivity to microstucture/brine/laying is real and a serious issue. The standard deviation of snow depth is far too high and the picker is snapping to clear internal structure of the snowpack. Smoothing/Aggregating can help here but we're just avoiding dealing with the physics.
