Change default colors through styling

Is there a way to change the color of the elements (such as the layer background colors) through styling? As of right now it seems like it is buried in the scss file and would require an update to the entire package to be applied. I feel like a better solution for this project may be to provide more atomic pieces of the code so that users can color components individually.
