A few words from a fly-pie lover

Hello, since you asked for discussions, here are my thoughts:

• The idea of achievements in fly-pie was fun, but I cannot help but feel that it was a bit of a waste of development time. I believe that if you want those types of features, they should be saved for last (if at all).
• Fly-pie was so good, functionality and looks-wise, that I doubt its a good idea to stray very far from that sort of design. You did say that ken-do is similar, I just want to affirm that what is not broken doesn't need fixing.
• I hope it runs under odd environments like X11 window managers. (I would understand if wayland ones are too hard for this type of software). I'm saying this because I use awesomewm and gnome-pie was too buggy to be used there.

Hi there! I agree with all of your points 100%.

• Achievements have a very low priority. However I think that they give a nice touch. So if there's time, I'll add them again.
• Interaction-wise, Ken-Do will be pretty much an exact clone of Fly-Pie. Also the visuals will be very similar. However, there are some planned differences:
  • There will be application-dependent menus with pre-defined menus for many application (it should be easy to contribute your own menu presets).
  • Less settings for tweaking the appearance. I plan to go a more Gnome-Pie-like approach (themes instead of a bazillion of sliders). It will be possible to style the menu using CSS, so it will be pretty easy to create themes.
  • I will try to make it possible to directly edit the menu in some kind of edit-mode (instead of a separate menu editor window).
• The best way to ensure that would be if you could test the prototype as soon as possible. Maybe we can identify issues early during the development. What kind of issues did you have with Gnome-Pie?

Gnome pie had severe flicker or it was completely black or both, I can't remember. Probably the second. It was a long time ago.
