Melodic sequentials |
The following exercises are called sequentials. They are performed by singing the same pattern transposed to each degree of a scale in sequence. For example, the first sequential, do re mi, is performed do re mi | re mi fa | mi fa sol | etc.
These sequentials are very helpful exercises for building fluidity with solfège syllables, and for aiding in recognition of standard patterns in a melody. Practice them both ascending and descending.
The sequentials are provided below in major. To sing in natural minor, substitute me for mi, le for la, and te for ti. To sing in harmonic minor, sing natural minor, but use ti instead of te. (Note that 6 and 7 will sound awkward in harmonic minor, because of the augmented fifth me–ti. Those can easily be skipped, since that interval is seldom used in the classical literature.)
ascending:
do re mi | re mi fa | mi fa sol | . . . | ti do re | do
descending:
do ti la | ti la sol | la sol fa | . . . | re do ti | do
ascending:
do re mi do | re mi fa re | mi fa sol mi | . . . | ti do re ti | do
descending:
do ti la do | ti la sol ti | la sol fa la | . . . | re do ti re | do
ascending:
do mi re do | re fa mi re | mi sol fa mi | . . . | ti re do ti | do
descending:
do la ti do | ti sol la ti | la fa sol la | . . . | re ti do re | do
ascending:
do mi | re fa | mi sol | . . . | ti re | do
descending:
do la | ti sol | la fa | . . . | re ti | do
ascending:
do re mi fa sol | re mi fa sol la | . . . | ti do re mi fa | do
descending:
do ti la sol fa | ti la sol fa mi | . . . | re do ti la sol | do
ascending:
do sol | re la | mi ti | . . . | ti fa | do

do fa | ti mi | la re | . . . | re sol | do
ascending:
do mi sol | re fa la | mi sol ti | . . . | ti re fa | do
