Working in feature/whole-game, perform alignment of the two periods simultaneously (using the par combinator?)

I've made some progress on this, I think I've mostly done it in pull-request #36 but I need some testing of this idea. In particular I think the current strategy doesn't quite force the evaluation of the alignments, but I have a good idea about how to do that (as I've documented in the code).
