This would only really make sense for large monitors or if the applications are "grouped" (only icons visible, no title).
But my idea was that the open apps are grouped on the panel to show which apps are on which workspace. For clarity, there could be numbers as the first thing in each group. Maybe like this:

First the icon to open the applications overview, followed by a group for each used workspace. If only one workspace is empty, I wouldn't show the number. If one application is opened in multiple workspaces, this could also be shown by simply showing the icon where the application is open
