Only saves about 10 bytes per GWT application, but the extra assignment appears to serve no purpose. Fixes gwtproject#10060

Only saves about 10 bytes per GWT application, but the extra assignment appears to serve no purpose. Also corrects some slightly inaccurate comments about how initialization behaves.
