because there's really no reason not to, and it breaks using right-click to copy a spreadsheet link and whatnot.

Ryan added the url shortener thing a long long time ago. If I had to guess why, I bet it's so that it fits better in channel topics, because real Google spreadsheet links are kind of long-winded. But yes, there doesn't seem to be any reason not to use the full links in the UI.
