<title>Free Geek Server Status</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Unexpected downtime: Fri Oct 18 9am-noon</h1>
<pre>
Our internet connection was broken this morning due to problems with the phone
lines. We've worked around the issue for now, but nearly all freegeek.org
services other than the website were affected during that time, and any mail
sent or received during that time may be delayed several hours or even days.
</pre>
<h1>Brief downtimes: Sunday Oct 13th, noon-10pm</h1>
<pre>
We rebooted several machines and recabled numerous machines, which resulted in
some brief downtime of several minutes at a time over the course of the
afternoon and evening.
</pre>
<h1>Finished server updates: Sun, 29 Sep 2013 10:40:00 -0700</h1>
<pre>
All servers should be up and running smoothly again.
</pre>
<h1>Rebooting severs: Sun, 29 Sep 2013 10:03:42 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Reboot in progress...
</pre>
<h1>Server downtime Sunday, September 29th, 9am-1pm</h1>
<pre>
Will be rebooting some servers as part of routine updates Sunday, September
29th, between the hours of 9am and 1pm.
Most freegeek.org services (mail, wiki, todo, etc.) will be down for hopefully
brief periods during this time (10-15 minutes).
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 15 Sep 2013 09:23:09 -0700: network back to normal</h1>
<pre>
Hopefully I didn't interrupt anybody when services went down
approx. 10 minutes early, but they should be back up now!
Quick upgrade! Report any problems to Technocrats, please!
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 15 Sep 2013 08:17:40 -0700: network downtime beginning soon</h1>
<pre>
Services could go down any minute and will be back by 1pm.
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 01 Sep 2013 21:25:25 -0700: finished routine security updates</h1>
<pre>
Updates went reasonably well, most services fully restored.
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 01 Sep 2013 19:50:58 -0700: routine security updates</h1>
<pre>
We are rebooting several servers for security updates, including most all of
freegeek.org servers, including www.freegeek.org.
</pre>
<h1>Sat, 24 Aug 2013 03:26:15 -0700: mail server back to normal</h1>
<pre>
All done moving it to an upgraded host.
</pre>
<h1>Sat, 24 Aug 2013 00:54:02 -0700: mail server going down</h1>
<pre>
Mail server going down for maintenance!
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 18 Aug 2013 23:40:40 -0700: services back to normal</h1>
<pre>
Success!
</pre>
<h1>Sun, 18 Aug 2013 21:26:25 -0700: a few services down for maintenance</h1>
<pre>I'm taking a few servers down to move to upgraded hardware, including:
pear (no service interruption), llama, hornet (cabling list),
press (testwww), plot (flow charts)
Hopefully everybody is sleeping and won't even notice these relatively
minor services go down for a while, BUT I hope to have them back by midnight.
</pre>
<h1>Fri, 02 Aug 2013 02:58:55 -0700: services restored</h1>
<pre>The services are back to normal on new hardware.</pre>
<h1>Fri, 02 Aug 2013 00:20:12 -0700: service downtime beginning: apt repositories, moodle, online sales and development repositories</h1>
<pre>Beginning a bit late now, will update as things happen.</pre>
<h1>Service downtime, Thursday 11pm-3am: apt repositories, moodle,
online sales and development repositories</h1>
<pre>
I will be migrating services off of an older machine that is running
outdated technology. Minimal services will be affected, including:
* apt.freegeek.org
* learning.freegeek.org
* dev.freegeek.org
* sales.freegeek.org
* as well as a few other internet accessible services
They may be down at any time during the maintenance window, but are
just moving to new hardware and will not be affected by upgrades.
Status updates will be posted to status.freegeek.org, please let me
know if you have any questions.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime complete: Tue, 16 Jul 2013 02:00:42 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Services should be returning to normal, let me know if you find issues.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime for {wiki,lists}.freegeek.org, Mon, 15 Jul 2013 22:36:09 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Downtime for upgrades is beginning now for the wiki and lists servers.
The maintenance window ends at 2am, but I hope to be done before then.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime over for www.freegeek.org, Sun, 07 Jul 2013 00:07:46 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Our cloud server vendor was able to resolve a problem with our
account's metadata, which I expect happened due to the age of our
account and host machine (I will get details later).<br />
I verified they fixed it on their end and it is working now.<br /><br />
UPDATE: The issue was resolved by repairing our filesystem, but no
explanation as to why rescue mode failed to boot was provided.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime extended for www.freegeek.org, Sat, 06 Jul 2013 22:49:22 -0700</h1>
<pre>
I completed my upgrade successfully and for testing purposes rebooted
the server, during which I noticed a potential hardware problem with
the filesystem of the server www.freegeek.org is hosted on.<br />
Our cloud server vendor's team is looking into the problem, which
required them to take the entire server down. I will post updates, but
am not sure when they will have it fixed.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime beginning for www.freegeek.org, Sat, 06 Jul 2013 22:02:20 -0700</h1>
<pre>
If all goes well as expected, services will be back in an hour or so.
</pre>
<h1>Downtime: Upgrading www.freegeek.org, Saturday, July 6th, 10pm - Sunday 2am</h1>
<pre>
I will be upgrading "oahu", the server that hosts our main website
freegeek.org (and "Gnusletter"). Other services (RT, email, etc) will
be unaffected.
The maintenance window is: Saturday, July 6th, 10pm - Sunday 2am
I already upgraded the Wordpress installation now for security updates
and will be upgrading the rest of the services hosted there tonight,
which may cause the server to be down for a period of time.
I will post status updates to http://status.freegeek.org/ throughout.
If you notice anything unordinary with the website or related services
after the upgrades I've done or will be doing, please let me know.
</pre>
<h1>mail.freegeek.org web interface: Wed, 29 May 2013 23:59:30 -0700

<pre>
RESTORED: Server should be back to normal now.
</pre>
<h1>Server downtime Sunday, June 9th, 11am-8pm</h1>
<pre>
We may be doing some major networking and power rearranging in the server room
this coming Sunday, June 9th, between 11am and 8pm.
Most freegeek.org services (mail, wiki, todo, etc.) may be down for several hours at a time.
Internal services will also be down for several hours during this time.
</pre>
<h1>mail.freegeek.org web interface: Wed, 29 May 2013 23:29:30 -0700

<pre>
The service will be down soon for upgrades.
</pre>
<h1>Network and services restored: Sat, 18 May 2013 09:29:14 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Services should be working again.
</pre>
<h1>Network and service downtime: Sat, 18 May 2013 07:43:40 -0700</h1>
<pre>
The servers will be rebooted starting in approximately 30 minutes.
</pre>
<h1>Network and service downtime: Saturday, May 16th, 8am - 9:30am</h1>
<pre>
Saturday I will be routinely rebooting many servers for maintenance
purposes. There shouldn't be significant downtime, but the internal
network as well as external services (including the website) may be
down for a short time during the maintenance window.
Everything should easily be back up and running by 9:30am.
</pre>
<h1>Services restored: Mon, 22 Apr 2013 20:34:44 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Services should be back to normal.
</pre>
<h1>Server reboot in progress: Mon, 22 Apr 2013 20:16:09 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Now rebooting servers. mail, wiki, todo, lists, etc. will be affected.
</pre>
<h1>Server downtime Monday, April 22nd, 8pm-10pm</h1>
<pre>
We will be rebooting several of our internet facing servers between 8pm and
10pm, Monday, April 22nd for a routine update.
The main website should continue to function, but nearly all other
freegeek.org (mail, wiki, todo, etc.) services will be down for part of that
time.
Downtime should remain brief- each service should only remain affected for a
few minutes.
</pre>
<h1>Unplanned outages, Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11am-1pm</h1>
<pre>
We had some unexpected downtime earlier today when a networking switch
was powered off. Should be back to normal now.
We will be replacing a hard drive on one of our internal machines; no external
freegeek.org services should be affected.
</pre>
<h1>Services restored, Sun, 10 Mar 2013 12:23:06 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Reboots finished, services should be restored to normal.
</pre>
<h1>Server reboot in progress, Sun, 10 Mar 2013 12:06:19 -0700</h1>
<pre>
Rebooting internet facing servers and many internal servers.
Expected downtime 10-15 minutes.
</pre>
<h1>Server Downtime, Sunday March 10th, 10am-5pm</h1>
<pre>
Apologies for the short notice...
We will be rebooting several of our internet facing servers between 11am and
5pm Sunday, March 10th for a routine update (yes, another one!).
The main website should continue to function, but nearly all other
