@sima-qian has started work on a new version of the site.

I had a look at the current logo and was wondering whether it was designed for FAC or whether it's a free icon? The tip of one leaf appears to have been erased accidentally (see marked area).
original fac-logo marking

If the website is redesigned, maybe we want to think about branding and a more tech-relevant logo? Here are a couple of scamps; others might want to suggest something different?

@MissArray I love these.

We have a separate rebranding and website redesign process that is in stealth mode. @nogainbar and @rebeccaradding are leading on it. I think there will be more news about it soon.

Good to hear we're doing something about branding! If at any point you'd like me to ask the branding-expert friend I mentioned to cast an eye, give us some feedback on the logo and blurbs, I think he wouldn't mind doing so pro bono.

Needless to add, if @nogainbar and @rebeccaradding can use either of these in some way, they're more than welcome to do so.

Those on the cohort who expressed an interest in being involved with a redesign of the website -- @njons, @thejoefriel, @harryyy27, @SleepySheepy172, @sbinlondon and I -- had a meeting on Thursday and discussed ideas for a redesign.

@njons took the following notes:

Discussion:

Do we want to completely overhaul the website?

  • No burning desire to revamp the entire website unless it makes sense to do so

Does anyone have specific ideas of what to do on the website?

  • Harry: Carousel visual for the previous projects
  • Joe: Using the idea of parallax shifting screens from Dan Abramov's workshop (colour code different sections)
  • Nathalie: The FAQ needs some love

Dan has mentioned that people using the website do not fully understand the offer

  • Introduce the overall process in a few steps
  • Use the shifting parallax screens to symbolise a process with multiple layers that develop into a partnership
  • Display the appropriate content as users reach a deeper understanding of what is on offer
  • Only provide form when the user is expected to be ready to commit to the process and fill in an application

Dan has mentioned splitting the website for participants (potential clients) and partners (potential funders)

  • The current content targets participants
  • Content has been written to specifically target funders

Other stuff to look out for

Next steps

  • Meet again to scope out some ideas on a whiteboard

Agree that the website would benefit from some, um, modularisation: if we want to target two distinct user groups, i.e. potential funders and potential participants, it makes sense to guide visitors to the right (for them) content. Perhaps add a basic navigation menu plus hyperlinked references in the body to the respective content?

@MissArray If you have ideas about a redesign, perhaps you'd have liked to join the redesign working group?

Once I get through the list of potential partner organisations I mean to contact and of past partners whose logos we're using, I'd be happy to. It's a question of finding enough time to research and revise what's on my backlog (hint: callbacks, APIs) and do other, stuff for FAC projects (and getting the laundry done somewhere in between...).
