is there a way to trigger an action to run for unit testing purposes?

I'm hoping to be able to write some unit tests, but I can't figure out how to trigger an action method to run independently, if it's even possible, given the implicit setup that is probably required. Any pointers? Thank you.

You can call the handlers just like a normal method, but they only run if the state machine is in the required state.

Can you elaborate on a concrete reproductive example of what you are trying to do?
