is there a way to endSitemap without calling createSitemapIndex

I am currently calling createSitemapIndex() to close the sitemap. I have no use for the index file and need to write more to cleanup the file.

Is there a way to close the sitemap file without creating an index? Looks like the visibility is private so no way for me use the writer to call endSitemap.
