Time of Arrival (TOA): TOA is a method for calculating distance by measuring the time a signal takes to travel from the transmitter to the receiver. This method requires precise synchronization of the clocks at both the transmitter and receiver to ensure accurate measurements. TOA is typically used in scenarios requiring high-precision positioning, such as GPS systems.
Angle of Arrival (AOA): AOA determines the location by measuring the angle at which the signal arrives at the receiver. Multiple antenna arrays are usually employed to measure the incident angle of the signal, and the position of the signal source is calculated using geometric relationships. AOA is suitable for environments with fewer multipath effects, such as open spaces or aerial applications.
Received Signal Strength (RSS): RSS estimates distance based on the strength of the received signal. The signal attenuates during propagation, and the receiver estimates the distance to the transmitter based on the extent of this attenuation. Although the RSS method is simple, its ranging accuracy is relatively low due to significant environmental influence on signal attenuation.
Trilateration: Trilateration uses three reference points with known positions to determine location by measuring the distance to these reference points. According to geometric principles, the intersection of these distances indicates the target's location. Trilateration is suitable for open environments with known reference point positions, such as outdoor positioning.
Fingerprinting: Fingerprinting involves pre-measuring and recording signal characteristics (such as RSS values) at various locations within the target area to establish a signal characteristic database. During actual positioning, the real-time measured signal characteristics are matched with the database to determine the target location. Fingerprinting is suitable for scenarios with stable signal characteristics and complex environments, such as indoor positioning.
Hybrid Positioning Methods: Hybrid positioning methods combine multiple ranging and positioning techniques to enhance accuracy and robustness. For example, combining TOA and AOA can compensate for the shortcomings of individual methods, improving positioning accuracy. Hybrid methods are suitable for scenarios requiring high-precision and stable positioning.
Kalman Filtering: Kalman filtering is a recursive algorithm used to estimate the state of dynamic systems. By fusing multiple measurement results, it reduces noise influence and provides more accurate state estimates. Kalman filtering is widely used in navigation, tracking, and control systems.
Particle Filtering: Particle filtering, based on Monte Carlo methods, is suitable for state estimation in nonlinear, non-Gaussian systems. By generating and evaluating a large number of random samples (particles), particle filtering provides robust state estimation in complex environments. This method is widely used in robotic positioning and tracking systems.
Indoor Navigation: Wireless positioning technology plays a crucial role in indoor navigation, helping users find their way within large buildings such as airports, shopping centers, and hospitals. Accurate positioning and navigation guidance enhance user experience and service efficiency.
Asset Tracking: Wireless positioning technology is used for real-time monitoring and locating of assets, such as goods management in warehouses, equipment tracking in hospitals, and logistics transportation management.
