Taking part in hacktoberfest

Do we want to take part in hacktoberfest?

I don't see why not. There's a lot of low-hanging fruits that can be good targets for PRs:

• Simple Design or layout Fixes (such as Autofocus to search-input #367, Improve Sitemap #334, Hide very old releases by default #50)
• Creating pages for new products. We should ideally have a list of products that we are looking to add to avoid duplicate effort or low-quality additions.
• Doing general release update chores.

We can create a pinned discussion for the hacktoberfest "getting-started" with details on the above, and follow the remaining guidelines to label things correctly at https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/resources/maintainers.

Interesting that it's open to Maintainers as well this year :)

In the checklist there is the first point:

Add the 'Hacktoberfest' topic to your repository/project so that folks know you're participating in Hacktoberfest.

Created a Pinned Issue and a Pinned Discussion with a getting started guide for Hacktoberfest Participants. (Both have the same content, but pinning works separately on GitHub, so I created both)

Minor TODOs before Hacktoberfest launches (1st October):

• Check all the linked issues, tag them appropriately (good-first-issue), and make sure they have all the details a beginner might need to contribute good solutions for them.
• Update our project README to link to the Hacktoberfest Guide.

Note to maintainers:

Be ready to review pull requests, approving those that are valid, and flagging those that are not as 'invalid' or 'spam'.
A pull request can be approved either by giving it an overall approving review from maintainers, or by merging the pull request, or adding the 'hacktoberfest-accepted' label.

You can also signup as a maintainer too celebrate Hacktoberfest by merging/approving/labelling PRs.

I'm taking a break this weekend, will be back to merging sometime next week.

Already adapted most of it into the CONTRIBUTING.md file, except for the "Recommended PRs" bit. Will merge those post Hacktoberfest.

Clarification on the PR merges:

Your pull requests will count toward your participation if they are in a repository with the 'hacktoberfest 'topic and once they have been merged, approved by a maintainer or labeled as hacktoberfest-accepted.

Additionally, any pull request with the hacktoberfest-accepted label, submitted to any public GitHub/GitLab repository, with or without the hacktoberfest topic, will be considered valid for Hacktoberfest.

Since our repo already has the hacktoberfest topic, just merging or approving PRs should make them count - we don't have to label anything unless it's spam.

You are right, that was my bad. The label hacktoberfest-accepted is not necessary when the topic on the repository is set. I no longer set the label 👍
