Currently the only thing one can do is repeatedly do upgrade_to_socks5 until it fails, when desiring to run a direct contact, or how does it work? Or does that function block until it is completely finished? I imagine not as otherwise my router wouldn't work?

This is not a valid issue. I misunderstood the library. Turns out that one call is just enough.
Added a new example PR (fix of my previous router attempt).

It's now clear to me that this issue was invalidly reported.
