Just an update: FOSDEM confirmed to be held Feb 1-2, 2020 in Brussels!

https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-08-11-dates-fosdem-2020/

Calls for devrooms should hopefully be announced soon (:

Folks -

(tagging everyone so that nobody misses this @yochannah @mkuzak @mr-c )

We've got to pick this up if we are serious about this. Proposal deadline is Sep 20 (I'm basically unavailable Sep 4 – 25).

I feel like we need to figure out
(1) Who exactly we are targeting (both speakers and audience)?
(2) What are people going to get out of this? i.e. why would they want to come
(3) What do we want people to speak on?

For the required proposal answers, see devroom_proposal.md

If we are going ahead, I'll open separate issues on budget estimations and format (: I'm in, and eLife is supportive.

@emmyft Thank you for spotting the opened call. I guess we need to figure it all out in the next two weeks then. Also pinging @c-martinez who may be interested in contributing.

Thanks @mkuzak @c-martinez. I'm going to open some more issues for the different components then (:

okay - I've kind of glued together bits from our original proposal plans into this and added a little more: https://hackmd.io/Jy2vrge0RveVdlryhu24Nw?edit - I've been using the github sync feature after each batch of editing to keep it up to date with this repo.

Things I wasn't sure about:

  • Who to put as primary contact (Emmy? or are you too busy with the sprint?)
  • Who to put as secondary...
  • whether or not to add more detail than we have. short and sweet is easy to review, but is it sufficient to be interesting and selection-worthy?

Thanks so much @yochannah - great start! I've just added a few more points... (hackmd is not giving me the option to push to github ): weird)

I'm wondering if they're expecting more details... it may be worth expanding the 2 long answers with reference to the goals of FOSDEM. Also expecting that we have to differentiate ourselves from devroom proposals like this one.

I don't mind being Primary contact (the Sprint will be over soon haha)– but I am wondering if we will stand a better chance putting either @yochannah or @mkuzak, as you are more experienced and less.... publisher-y :)

I'm happy enough to put my name first. I"m on holiday at the minute - I'm planning to submit this on Wednesday the 11th so it doesn't get forgotten. Please comment / add additions before then!

I haven't had an email, but I looks like we didn't make the list - https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-10-01-accepted-developer-rooms/

@yochannah and I discussed this yesterday and would like to submit a talk about the tooling / infrastructure that supports research software development. Continuous integration, GitHub actions, bots etc.
I will also submit the talk around 4OSS lesson.
