Goal 3 of the Carpentries Strategic Plan is to Provide opportunities for growth and professional development of our volunteers and Core Team. One of the objectives under this goal is:

  • Create structures and pathways for identifying and utilising training opportunities for Core Team members to develop professional skills in management and/or independent contributor roles.

This issue tracks progress we are making toward training and developing Core Team members.

Following up on feedback from the annual performance review, we announced that Core Team members have the opportunity to participate in complimentary coaching through the non-profit Coaching For Everyone. CFE is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, designed to provide complimentary coaching and leadership services to traditionally under-resourced populations, particularly BIPOC young adults, K-12 educators, and nonprofit employees.

Those who opted in received 6 one-on-one, 1-hour long, coaching sessions with CFE coaches. Coaches helped define a goal to work towards and approach to reaching it.

Thanks to funding we received from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, we are working with Tara Robertson to co-design an article discussion group and facilitate up to 4 article discussion group sessions for The Carpentries Team Leads to build knowledge, understanding and capacity to apply an Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility lens to their functional work.

In February 2022 @ErinBecker developed a Team Lead Development schedule through September 2022. Team Leads watch professional development videos from CZI's Movement & Capacity Building team and come together during meetings to discuss what we learned and how to apply it to leading The Carpentries programmatic teams.

In January 2023, we will be piloting a Supervisor Onboarding program, which will introduce members of The Carpentries Core Team to our philosophy and practices around supervising CT members. Four Team Leads will take part in the onboarding and be prepared to begin supervising individuals in mid-Q1 2023.

Based on feedback received during 2022 Performance Reviews, the Executive Team will be expanding our professional development opportunities, which had previously been offered only to Team Leads. We will introduce structured opportunities for learning and sharing learnings across the full Core Team. More information to come in Q1 2023.

We developed and implemented a Supervisor Onboarding program in January 2023. We are planning additional training for Supervisors in change management.

The Executive Team is reviewing resources developed for the Executive Council by the consultancy group Walk Together, for adaptation and use with our full Core Team.

In Q3, we ran our first quarterly professional development session for the full Core Team. The session was focused on "Practicing Consent at Work" as developed by Dara Silverman and delivered as part of the CZI training series.

In Q2 2024, we ran a professional development session for the full Core Team. The session was focused on "How to Actually Prioritize" as developed by Marissa Graciosa and delivered as part of the CZI training series.

We have continued to circulate CZI's monthly capacity building opportunities to the Core Team, and recommend specific sessions to individuals based on their roles and interests. In addition, the Management Team (Supervisors) are participating in the four part series on Evaluation and Data Analysis led by Dr. Ayesha Boyce.
