Web component ui-shell: nav items not showing

Description

Using the ui-shell web component, the links in the navigation are hidden. There seems to be no documentation on how to show them, and both the component documentation and the component live demo have the links hidden.

Possibly related to this older issue

Workaround:

    display: flex;
}
