Disclaimer: This is not a bug report, sorry if this is not the best channel to get in touch.

I plan to start working soon on integrating Julius into the official Debian repositories, so all Debian users could install it by running apt install julius without having to go through GitHub. This would in turn make it available for Debian derivatives like Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

If you wish to follow all activity on this front, I will keep the following Debian bug report updated: https://bugs.debian.org/975380

If some maintainers of Julius would like to be kept in the loop for anything Julius-related on the Debian side, please share an e-mail with me and I’ll make sure to include you in all further discussion.

Obviously, feel free to ask for any kind of detail, and I’ll answer to the best of my abilities.

Hey, thanks for trying to create a deb package!

I believe augustus uses augustus-game, so I guess Julius could use the same nomenclature (julius-game).

@bvschaik what do you think?

We discussed about it with other Debian maintainers, and the conclusion is that julius deserves the "julius" name, without any kind of suffix ;)

@bvschaik what do you think?

I was about to suggest the same thing, but plain julius is even better!

Let us know if you need any changes, so we can integrate them in the project directly.

I’m not going to need any change for the initial packaging, I found previous efforts from other Debian maintainers that helped speeding up the process and already have something ready, and I have a sponsor who is willing to review and upload it to Debian unstable repositories.

Our linter tool reported a couple things that could be improved and would in my opinion be better handled upstream than as Debian patches, but for these I’m going to open dedicated issues here (and hopefully find some time to provide patches myself).

I will keep you tuned about the progress of this package, keeping in mind that it is going to need a manual review by one of our team since it is its first inclusion in Debian. I expect that to be done in a couple weeks, maybe a couple months (they have many packages to review, and this is a small team).

In the Debian source packages metadata, we usually include an e-mail contact for the upstream. Is there one that you would be OK to share with us (you could send it to debian<AT>dotslashplay.it), or would you rather avoid that?

The initial upload for julius is on its way, it now has to clear this queue: https://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html (Ctrl + F "julius" to find it). Once it has gone through this manual validation process, future updates will no longer need to go through it so they can be much more reactive.

Feel free to not follow that part of the process (it is a bit boring), I will send you a new ping when it finally reaches the actual Debian repositories.
