======
libwired is a portable C runtime library that provides support for a lightweight
object-oriented class system with polymorphic functions. It also provides easy
to use APIs for common data structures, strings, files and sockets, including
secure TLS based networking. The goal of the library is ease of use, safety and
portability. It was originally created for a client/server system called "Wired",
and is especially suited for creating portable network applications.
USAGE
=====
Run the `configure` script provided with the `--help` flag to see available
options. Depending on the options, certain functionality may not be included.
After configuring as needed, run `make`. The library and its header files will
be placed in the `run/` directory. From there, either copy the library and the
headers to your project, or include the `run/include/` and `run/lib` paths when
building your project.
The short, recommended way:
./configure --enable-all
make
ls -l run/lib run/include/wired
libwired is currently only available as a static library.

libwired has been tested successfully on the following platforms:
Mac OS X 10.9
FreeBSD 9.2
OpenBSD 5.6
CLASS SYSTEM
============
libwired is designed around a class system where objects are called "instances".
An instance is a struct which contains a special runtime base struct as its
first member. Registering an instance with the runtime gives it an "instance
id", which can later be queried. Instance registration also points out concrete
implementations of functions that can then be polymorphic, i.e. used with any
instance in the system. These include the memory management functions, and
functions to copy, hash or get a description for an instance.

MEMORY MANAGEMENT
=================
Memory is managed by a retain count system. All instances respond to functions
to retain the instance, release the instance and query the instance's current
retain count. This system is based on ownership. If you create an instance using
an "alloc" function or a "copy" function, e.g. a function that includes those
terms as part of its name, you now own the instance. You can also gain ownership
of an existing instance by calling "retain" on it. After "alloc"-ing, "copy"-ing
or "retain"-ing, you are responsible for calling "release" on the instance when
you're done with it. If you are the last or only owner of the instance,
"release"-ing will cause the instance's retain count to go to zero, and the
instance's "dealloc" function will be called and the instance's memory
deallocated.
As a special feature, you can also call "autorelease" on an instance. There is a
special class of instances called "pools". Creating a "pool" instance makes that
pool the current pool. When calling "autorelease" on some other instance, the
instance will not be immediately released nor will its retain count immediately
go down. Instead, the actual release will be called when the current pool is
drained or deallocated.
Most functionality in libwired requires there to be a pool in place. A pool
should be created at startup and depending on the application itself,
periodically drained.
