Over the past few months, we have been discussing the implementation requirements for ansible-runner container images.
The previous runner images were not reliably built, and the tags didn't properly describe the contents of the image. In most cases the runner images never contained actual releases of runner or ansible-core.
Instead of continuing to provide container images for runner, we're moving to a more flexible means of building Execution Environments via ansible-builder, that will ultimately provide better flexibility, support definitive version constraints, operating system selection, and architectures. The work of releasing ansible-builder "2.0" is not complete as of yet, but will be in the coming months.
The runner documentation describing "Using Runner as a container interface to Ansible" will be updated according to the above information once the new release of ansible-builder is complete. In addition, the quay.io/ansible/ansible-runner repo will be discontinued.
