If two species are opened in the order of species #1 then species #2 then when an ability or talent is dropped on species #2, nothing happens. If the ability or talent is dropped on species #1 then the ability/talent actually appears on species #2. This happens with species and abilities/talents in any combination of their being in the sidebar or compendium.
