There is no common method to get the subsections of an abstract section, which could be very useful in several genric contexts.
Also a generic common interface for AbstractSection refs to access the referred section would be pleasant.

I agree with that. Currently, I use the o.e.x.xdoc.generator.AbstractSectionExtension for that task.
