The standard combination of CUPS and the Brother drivers for the HL-L3230CDW and the HL-1110 printers, is that the BLACK text is in fact, not black, it's a bit too far on the pale size of gray, and the colour images on the CDW printer are quite faded, instead of being STRONGLY COLOURED.

AND what really pisses me off is that everyone seems to have overlooked this, AND there is NO colour density control for the CDW and sort of not much control or variation in the 1110 printers.

It's all stuck in "economy / ink saver mode".

It's nice that the printer runs - but it's not particularly great that the print is very pale.

AND now today when it really counts - on the kind of highest end colour documents - there IS not adjustment on the CDW printer drivers / cups.

I will help if I can, to get this operating properly...

@zdohnal zdohnal changed the title This is nice... It's certainly improved since I started the ball rolling with Brother in Japan... BUT [Brother] Color density is low Dec 18, 2024

Hi @Phuxxi,

what is your OS, CUPS version, cups-filters version? Can you attach your PPD here with .txt suffix?

If your driver is classic (non-IPP everywhere or driverless) one from Brother and using non-standard PPD keyword for density or any other density setting is missing, then we can't help much - such driver takes care of the setting by itself.

If the printer uses IPP Everywhere/AirPrint, then we probably can influence the output - however IIRC cups-filters loads color profiles from color manager as well, which might have influence on it too.

@michaelrsweet how do we actually handle color density? Is it related to color spaces which we get from urf-supported and pwg-raster-document-types-supported?

@zdohnal We don't handle "color density" or anything like it - that is a printer (hardware) function.

That said, the HL-L3230CDW does support AirPrint and IPP Everywhere, so the Brother drivers should not be necessary for that printer at least and would be something to try. And there is always the printer's control panel to check - sometimes there is an "eco mode" or similar option there that will override everything the driver could do... :/
