Needs to be split

Variables that need to be split is a "class" of problem that needs to be weeded out. An overall approach is to find these and fix them. Many require a hand fix, though some can be fixed en masse. One script to this looks for duplicates in the same [modified] scope. See the QA readme section on scripts. The result of this script, which is just a listing of variables that it thinks are repeated, if committed is here. Not all of these are problems--see the readme--but many are.
