This is the first exercise for you to build your Career Development Plan, during this module.

Write down.
Only when you write down can you understand yourself.

Don’t ignore your life circumstances until the final projects. You need to plan now and make the dev life your new life.

Your goal is to feel and act like a developer on a daily/weekly basis. While you are training and even more so after your training. Your goal is for you, daily, to develop software. If your life circumstances don’t allow it, you need to find at least 15h at least weekly. During these hours, you need to have energy and be distraction-free.

If your current situation doesn’t allow you to find quality time, your plan must include what changes you will work on to FIND that time.

Estimated time in hours

1

What is the purpose of this assignment?

Observe: how much time do you have? How much energy do you have? What are your distractions? How much does your study hour availability change from what you originally planned?

Write down:

  • The running of your day
  • The hours during the week you dedicate to study
  • The energy levels during those hours
  • The distractions (of any kind) during those hours
  • The changes you are working on to find more quality time

Prompts: these are common reasons why our trainees find themselves without time and energy to study. Some of them might apply to you, too, so think about them

  • Caring for others (e.g. children, relatives)
  • Shift work / Long working hours (e.g. unstable hours, night shifts, long shifts)
  • Illness and disability
  • Housing and homelessness
  • Immigration issues
  • Parallel training
  • Family values/expectations
  • Bereavement
  • Global events (e.g. war)

How to submit

  • Create a document with the following titles and add your reflections to it:
    - Summary of my current situation
    - My current plan
    - What distractions I have / My energy levels during study
    - Original plans I had after I finished the training
  • Share your document with 1-2 people with similar situations or experiences
  • Discuss your document with them to get some input
  • Add the link to this document as a comment on this issue. Make sure it can be commented by anyone.

Fantastic reflection.
I added some suggestions which Grammarly gave me - it had a lot of suggestions for making it less wordy or replacing words you used a lot or were unnecessary, so try using it when you can.
