The icon is glitched. It doesn't seem to display the password prompt correctly either the smaller icon.

Which version of elementary are you using?
Could you check if the file /usr/share/icons/elementary/apps/128/system-software-installer.svg is present on your system?

The Synaptic icon is only a link, maybe elementary has removed the actual file in a recent update.

The icon file that the symbolic link would point to is indeed missing or renamed. Depending on what you want to use you could use system-software-install.svg for AppCenter's icon, or add back in the icon you were linking to previously.

This affects me on elementaryOS 0.4.1 Loki.
