search returning no results for short search phrases

E.g. I have a part named "promoter", but a search for anything less than "promot" gives me 0 results.
Interestingly a search for promoterrr results in 1 result.
Is there some requirement that search results must be within 2 mismatches and lack of characters also counting?

Maybe you could ask the database "how many result will you return on this query" and if it says [low number] then you just accept them all despite not being within 2 mismatches?
