We have completed a label annotation demo project to demonstrate the feasibility of this user story, creating 5 demos using separate 3D viewers to load a single JSON manifest of labels annotated on a 3D model. See VIEWER_JSON_DEMOS.md, #17, and #25 for more details.

During the IIIF Annual Conference 2023 the week of June 5 2023, there was discussion of potential requirements and attributes for text-label annotation items:

  • Types of annotation targets could include points (X/Y/Z), 2D areas, or 3D rectangular prisms
  • Needs position property
  • Could optionally have normal property
  • Could optionally have some reference or relationship to a camera annotation (to reference camera with clear view of annotation)
  • Attributes or properties of label text (such as a text offset) seem out of scope
