Having looked at othe rissues regrading the missing popup menu border, perhaps this is a Xorg onyl issue? Anyhow, Qt apps seem to have a very thick menu border:

Looks like the 2nd boder should be a shadow? If so, perhap it is just too dark?

I confirm this behaviour:

And this thick popup menu border is even thickier on right click menus:
