Installing basemap==1.3.6 on macos required the following install procedure:
matplotlib/basemap#583

with python==3.9

i.e. brew install geos. This does not seem to be an issue with more recent versions of basemap i.e. 1.4.1. As this seemed to install previously without issue.

A mention of this should be included in the install notes for all platforms. https://libgeos.org/usage/install/
