Right now, the search function seems to be drawing from an automated image url instead of the image display within the file, following a VERY specific url inquiry. In short, the thumbnail is drawn from the same file name as the xml file, but simply with a change of the extension to .jpg. This means that .gif and .tif files don't work as thumbnails, that .JPG (capitalized) does not display as a thumbnail, nor does something like caes0599a.jpg display (because of the "a" following caes0599).
I would also note that there is significant image-stretching in the thumbnails too.
Is it possible to address this in the upcoming update to the site?
