  1. We can get a few Low-cost Journals here: https://github.com/JoachimGoedhart/LOA
  2. We can obtain some data on the cost of APC in various journals here. Last updated two years ago, but it is a good start
  3. Cost of open access publishing in Germany: https://github.com/njahn82/paper_openapc
  4. FourishAI is already doing part of what we could be interested in but hasn't been updated in years. https://github.com/FlourishOA/Data. The data is useful; what can we borrow from what they have done. The information they have is essential; we need to find a way of ensuring continuity and sustainability.
  5. OpenAPC: Would have additional information we may require.

having looked at the above resources, what problem needs solving? What can we address during the Sprint, especially with potential contributors?

  • A Website to host the data?
  • Web scrapper to automatically extract the information from various publishers?
  • List of funding opportunities for OA publishing?

In light of the above resources, we may:

  1. Extend the LowCostOpenAccess resource to include information on the range of APCs. This may be useful in combination with waivers or subsidies being offered by the journals.
  2. Create web scrapper would be useful to obtain the data on the APCs while also building on the already existing data.
  3. As authors may choose to have their APCs covered by OA funding agencies, we can also include this in the resource. Even some publishers offer assistance on APC funding. For example, PLoS has a publication fee assistance program.
  4. We may create a short survey to get feedback from prospective users on what information authors look for as they look forward to publishing.

I think having a form like structure on the GitHub-hosted site would be helpful. Anyone who knows of a OA journal that is free/costs less for APC/has subsidies for low and mid-income countries should be able to submit from a simple form on the LowCostOpenAccess site which then can be accepted/discarded by the moderator.

Some useful resources:

  1. Google Form to GitHub issue: 1, 2, 3, 4 - the last one is probably the best. THINGS TO CONSIDER: Personal data, if any collected, being handled though Google
  2. TypeForm form to GitHub issue: 1. THINGS TO CONSIDER: Personal data, if any collected, being handled though TypeForm

That is very useful @psubhashish, this can be linked in the site, and would allow us to collect additional information from the users of Affordabee.

Thank you @psubhashish. We could also use the same strategy to collect feedback on the Affordabee site.

Great, let's create an issue with this as an independent task.
