I see to main issues with the use of auto-api:

they don't support deprecated cycle based on decorators: Support PEP-702 style deprecations readthedocs/sphinx-autoapi#401
they don't support extensive templating: is it possible to split class method in separated pages ? readthedocs/sphinx-autoapi#403

It's a huge limitation as the build libs might require both these functionalities. Let's investigate and if nothing is possible, rollback to api-doc
